Simply Kuchipudi

Students from Kuchipudi Kalakshetra came up with a pleasing performance.

DELECTABLE NUANCES The dancers brought out the embedded expressions.

The recitals presented by dance students of the Kuchipudi Kalakshetra, an offshoot of the Kuchipudi Art Academy, Chennai, turned out to be a treat of some of the delectable nuances of the style. Organised by the Visakha Music Academy in Kalabharathi, it had expert nattuvangam by the principal of the institute, Hari Rama Murthy.

The repertoire in the first half comprised a perfect presentation of Vinayaka Koutwam in Raagamaalika by Kaavya. The Adhyatma Ramayanakeerthana, set in Dhanyasi, presented by Aparna Swathi, Viswasanthi and Subba Raju, followed by Adivo Alladivo of Annamayya by Anuradha, Sobha and Subba Raju expertly brought out the expression embedded in the lyrics. A thillana set to music in Raagam Putrika was presented with grace by Anuradha, Viswasanthi, Kaavya and Sobha, but not without scope for better synchrony between themselves. The Pravesadaruvu from Bhaamakalaapam, depicting the introduction of the haughty Satyabhaama, her pangs of separation from Lord Krishna, the Lekha episode and the happy reunion with the Lord formed the second half. Lakshmi Pavitra portrayed the role of Bhaama well but appeared rather stiff in her body language and reserved in expression. Himabindu as Krishna was captivating even in her brief appearance.

The placement of big banners of the Visakha Music Academy and the sponsors of the programme, BSNL, on a blue backdrop, did not create a positive effect on the stage. The artistes were supported on mridangam by Kanthilal with evocative vocal from Sai Savitri. A Satya Vishal on violin and Atchuta Rao on flute also lent good support.
