Blend of melody and bhava

Up-and-coming Kathakali artistes came good in a concert and play.

Fans of Kathakali in Thiruvananthapuram were treated to a concert and a Kathakali play put up by youngsters. A `Kadhakalipadha Kacheri' organised by Drisyavedi and Wisconsin University in the United States gave the youngsters a chance to prove their mettle.

Pathiyoor Sankarankutty led the Kacheri that was held at Thirthapadamandapam. Sankarankutty, a trained Carnatic singer impressed the audience with his melodious, voice and style. Kadhakalipada Kacheri, (a concert of Kathakali padams) was an innovation of the late Kalamandalam Neelakandan Nambeesan. His disciples like Embranthiri, Hyderali and Haridas contributed much to transform it into a full-fledged music programme.

Sankarankutty's two-hour concert included different padhams and ragas from different stories. `Ajithahare' (`Kuchelavritham'), `Samyamakannorudyanam', `Angane' (`Nalacharitham Randamdivasam'), `Vijanebatha' and `Swairavachanam' (`Nalacharitham Munaamdivasam'), `Kim Kim Maho' (`Banayudham'), `Thanikalani' (`Niyalkuttu') were sugn by this talented singer. His selection of Padhams and Raghas were exceptionally good. Kalamandalam Hareesh supported Sankarankutty well. Margi Retnakaran, Margi Venugopal and Kalamandalam Srikanth enriched the musical evening with their performance on the percussion.

On June 27, `Nalacharitham Onaamdivasam' was performed at Vylloppilly Samskriti Bhavan. Kalamandalam Shanmughan excelled in his role of Nala. Nala the king of Naishada Rajya falls in love with Damayanthi after listening to Narada's description of her beauty and charm. The infatuated king's daydreams about her is expressed in the famous padam `Kundinanayaka.'Shanmughan displayed his skills in this scene and his gestures and bhavas complemented the song and the scene.

Kalanilayam Raghavan, who has frequently performed the role of Hamsa, proved once gain his mastery of the role. Narada was enacted by Peethambaran. Kalamandalam Sudheesh and Hareesh were the musicians. Margi Venugopal and Margi Retnakaran accompanied on the chenda and the madhalam.
