President's story

President APJ Abdul Kalam's autobiography Parwaaz - Wings Of Fire has been released in the form of an audio book. The book comes with a CD that comprises songs directed by 3 Brothers & A Violin, is directed by Narayan Parasuram while the narration is by Gulzar. The audio book and the CD, priced at Rs. 200, has been translated from English (the original text) to Hindi.

Gulzar, in his Foreword, says: "Every language has its finer nuances, so my effort has been to maintain a basic Hindi-Urdu idiom, as these two languages are like Ganga and Jamuna and convey as precisely as possible what the president has written, so that the essence is not lost in the translation." The writer-poet told Screen that he was motivated to do the voice-overs as well because the president is a very inspiring personality.

The autobiography covers the President's journey from being a child to a common man to taking on the highest office. The book uses simple language and is straightforward. I was born into a middle-class Tamil family in the island town of Rameswaram in the erstwhile Madras state. My father, Jainulabdeen, had neither much formal education nor much wealth; despite these disadvantages, he possessed great innate wisdom and a true generosity of spirit... reads the book.

The CD offers a fascinating collection of music from varied regions of India. Shankar Mahadevan, 3 Brothers & a Violin, Anooradha Sriram and Bombay Jayashree are the singers.
