The bottomline: A clone of scary movies.
The haunted hall in Devi theatre on Tuesday said it all. This scary movie is blessed with a spooky setting, with a little live romance thrown in, for voyeurs. And for most parts, the quirky characters in the movie hall seem to be more interesting than what unfolds on screen.
`Godsend' spins a yawn of a tale with a generous dose of ingredients that give you déjà vu of a sub-genre made popular by `Night' Shyamalan.
Adam, an eight-year old kid (Cameron Bright), cloned back to life after death in an accident, is disturbed by ghostly visions and keeps mumbling lines as he tries to sound like Haley Joel Osment in `Sixth Sense.' When he says ``Something bad is going to happen," you almost believe it's an inside joke the scriptwriters sneaked into the movie, given how terrible it really turns out to be.
The parents Paul (Greg Kinnear) and Jessie (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) had not expected Dr. Richard Wells' (Robert De Niro) experiment to go this wrong. Their kid is now American Pyscho Jr.
Every other Hollywood horror flick, these days, has a cute kid behaving all grown-up and psycho. That, by far, is the most horrifying thing about `Godsend.' Another truly terrifying thing, in this narrative that stretches your yawn, is watching De Niro perform like a programmed robot. We've seen him do roles with psychotic shades before and how he excels in them.
But was that him in `Godsend'? Or was it just a clone assigned with a role any lesser actor could have sleepwalked through. Greg Kinnear is wasted too. And all Rebecca has to do is look hot and spends half the time in the movie seducing her husband.
If you must inflict this movie onto yourself, wait for the DVD. Heard it has four alternative endings. Maybe you'll like it for the same reasons you love the Scary Movie series.
