Master musician Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna turned 76 on July 6. Marking the occasion, D.V. Mohanakrishna of Hyderabad, a senior disciple of Dr. Balamuralikrishna and a singer of merit gave a concert for Swarajhari of Vijayawada at the Sri Sivaramakrishna Kshetram.
A deep, vibrant voice and sharp manodharmam are Mohanakrishna's assets. Aptly for the occasion, Mohanakrishna rendered in his concert, only the compositions of his guru for which, he was accompanied by Ampolu Muralikrishna on the violin, N.S. Kalyanaraman on the mridangam and M. Haribabu on the ghatam. The concert started with a crisp varnam in Gambhiranata, which was followed by Sri Sakala Ganadhipa in Arabhi, Tarunamidenamma in Hymavathi, Anniyu Neeve in Mohana and Akhiladeva nuta pade in Megharanjani. There were brief and attractive raga versions of Hymavathi and Arabhi.
Tamralochani in Latangi was taken up by Mohanakrishna for the main item. The raga delineation was exhaustive and melodious. It left a haunting impression. The kalpana swaras in Latangi were also neat and precise. Ampolu Muralikrishna impressed with his versions of Latangi and Arabhi. The percussionists presented a good rhythmic treat at the end of the Latangi keertana. The concert came to a close with a lively thillana in Kadanakutuhalam.
