Noted lyricist remembered

Padmaraju's work reflected a poetic finesse and of human values.

Visakha Sahithi organised a talk on the renowned cine lyricist, Palagummi Padmaraju's trendsetting contribution to Telugu literature.

The talk was delivered by S. Polaiah, who is a lecturer with A.V.N. College senior Telugu lecturer.

It may also be mentioned here that Polaiah has received a doctoral degree for his thesis on the same topic.

Early days

Born on the June 24, 1915 in Tirupathipuram in West Godavari district, Palagummi Padmaraju worked as science lecturer in P.R. Government College, Kakinada from 1939, until he was drafted by the renowned B.N. Reddy to compose lyrics for his venture Bangarupapa, directed and produced under the Vauhini banner in the early 1950s. Thereafter he ruled the roost for over three decades.

Bahudoorapu Baatasaari was his last leg in the Telugu movie field, recalled Polaiah while reciting some of his hit film lyrics. He could collect 60 stories, eight novels, 30 kavithalu, and as many plays and play for the stage and the Akaashvani studios at Chennai, Hyderabad and Vijayawada.

Poetic beauty

All his works stand unanimously hailed as poetically prudent exposition of humanistic and realistic ideas . The subject and its empathetic treatment including the attributes of the characters and their inter-relationships reflected a poetic finesse, Polaiah said quoting examples.

Former Andhra University Telugu professor, K. Malayavaasini who chaired the session hailed Palagummi as the only first individual who helped find the Telugu story a place on the international map of literature and also help it fetch awards. Being a science teacher, his literary works reflected scientific analysis of the subject; she said quoting the example of his Puritipaata, a trendsetter of empathetic expression of feminism in literature in the form of Kaavyakhandika.

Earlier, while the secretary of the Sahithi, Jampana Kumara Varma introduced Polaiah and presented the welcome address.

The president of Praja Spandana, C.S. Rao who was guest of honour, noted litterateurs Ponnada Kumar, Vemuganti Vasudeva Rao, Koganti Vijayalakshmi and others also paid tributes to Palagummi and recalled his contribution to Telugu literature .
