DANCE TRACK Slum children staging a dance drama
Juara means tide and it aptly described the enthusiasm with which this two-day programme was held in Bhubaneswar recently. It was a programme for and by slum children.
Organised by a CYSD-Plan at T.T.D. Kalyan mandap, the function aimed at creating awareness among slum children and giving them their own space. It is not enough to provide facilities to the children growing up in the slums. They have to be brought into the mainstream with a sensitisation strategy and their creativity has to get a platform.
Interestingly, the programme took off with a dance drama by the children. More than 700 children from different slums of Bhubaneswar took part in the function and there were a few children from outside districts like Mayurbhanj too. The cultural programme of music and dance was hugely enjoyed by children themselves. The organisers as well as the participants believe that through this cultural programme, `Juara 2005' could give the children a much-needed platform to showcase their creative talents. The tidal wave of children's response should, however, underscore the need for this programme being a regular cultural affair.
