Engaging ashtaavadhaanam

Akella Bala Bhanu's `ashtaavadhaanam' show signifies the entry of women into the hitherto male-dominated sphere.

WORD PLAY The `Ashtaavadhaanam' in progress

Well-known literary organisation Sahitya Surabhi organised an Ashtaavadhaanam programme on Sunday featuring the Sanskrit lecturer of A.S.N. Mahila College in Amalapuram, Akella Bala Bhanu.

Vedula Subrahmanya Sastry, who coordinated the event, traced the origin and development of the art of showcasing the literary acumen in quaint composing and rendering of verses extempore, from time immemorial.

Gradually, the art came to be known as avadhaanam. Those who accomplish such feats are called avadhaanis, mostly all men till the emergence of a few women, including Bhanu, on the scene recently," Prof. Sastry explained.

Gratifyingly enough, six of the eight pruchchakaas (questioners) were highly learned women. Koganti Vijaya Lakshmi was in charge of varnana (suggesting a subject for poetic description); Dwadasi Lalitha Kumari - Dattapadi (suggesting four words for weaving a similar poem incorporating them meaningfully); G. Champavathi - Aasuvu (giving a subject to compose again a similar poem instantly); Rambhatla Satyavathi - Aprastutha Prasangam (disturbing the concentration of the avadhaani raising irrelevant topics for opinion); Kandala Kanakamahalakshmi - Purana Pathanam (suggesting a few lines of a verse from some epic for further narration and elaboration) and Peri Lakshmi Rajyam - ringing a bell at the most inappropriate moment.

They ably fulfilled their assignments with as much ιlan as that of the other two questioners, Nemani Ramajogi Sanyasi Rao and Ayyala Somayajula Gopala Rao. Sanyasi Rao was in charge of Samasyapooranam and Gopala Rao - Nishiddhaakshari (specifying some syllables phrase after phrase to be avoided while the composing of a poem goes on, on the given subject).

The Surabhi president, Vriddhula Kalyana Rama Rao, and noted litterateur Oruganti Seetha, who was guest of honour, congratulated Bhanu and felicitated all those who participated and contributed grandeur to the event.
