Mom is the word

SHOBA NAIR

Shobha dons the role of the mother in a number of serials and films.

MOTHER IMAGE: Shobha Mohan.

With a serene countenance that suits the image of the traditional mother on the silver screen, Shobha Mohan is never tired of donning the mantle of motherhood, even to those of her own age.

"The viewers have accepted me as such, and I hate to deviate," she said as she recalled the attention she received during the shooting of `Chaandu Pottu,' where she plays Dileep's mother.

"She acts as a mother - young, middle-aged and aged. At present, she fits into all the three roles," adds her husband, Mohan Kumar.

Daughter of eminent actor of yesteryear, the late Kottarakkara Shreedharan Nair, Shobha's entry into tinsel world was as a young heroine in Naana productions' `Balloon' in 1982. Her only other experience then was a role in a college drama at the time of her graduation from S.N. College, Kollam. Later, she joined the Kerala Peoples Arts Club and acted in `Ningalene Communistacki.' Shobha and her husband worked together in many drama troupes such as Navadhara, Changanacherry Geetha and Janani that presented many plays like `Mahatvam,' `Saakshi, Veedhi,' `Moham' and the like. The couple had their own troupe, Eka, in which they had written and directed their own plays. Simultaneously, Shobha also acted in a few telefilms like `Nilavillakku,' `Nikshepam' and others for Doordarshan.

"In dramas, the enactment reaches completion within a few hours and we merge with the character unawares, which is indeed a pleasure," says Shobha.

"Unfortunately, the popularity of dramas has dwindled, especially with the onset of mega-serials," she rues.

During the last three years she appeared on the mini-screen, in serials like `Porutham,' `Swayamvaram,' `Manasaputri,' and `Varsha,' to the recent ones like `Kavyanjali' and `Sthreethwam.' She dons the role of the mother in `M.T.'s stories' in Amritha Channel.

Shobha has also acted in movies like `Maargom,' `Nerku Neru,' and `Kannemadanguka.' In Blessy's `Gift of The God,' she plays Sister Nirmala (successor of Mother Teresa).

A representative of the missionary felt that she had portrayed Sister Nirmala to perfection. `Malayalee Mammenu Vanackum,' `Rapagal,' `Vellinakshathram' are some of the noted other films she has acted. She says that she prefers "art movies" to mainstream ones as the "characterisation is very strong."

Shobha now looks forward to her role of a mentally ill patient in the serial `Kaliveedu.' She plays Menaka's mother in the serial.
