Teaching to appreciate

BHAWANI CHEERATH

Kerala State Chalachitra Academy will conduct a film appreciation course from August 1 to 15.

"All of us started our journey in films through exposure to films, and such appreciation courses.

"This is more relevant in the present times because films are cultural documents and are important to researchers, journalists and critics and anyone associated with film-oriented activities," says Bina Paul Venugopal, Deputy Director (Festivals) of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (KSCA).

The KSCA as part of its role in promoting finer audiences with sensitivity to the medium has pursued this by holding regular film appreciation courses at different centres in the state.

Scheduled for two weeks from August 1 to 15, the sessions in theoretical and practical studies of the art and the history of film and the development of cinema as a medium of art and communication.

One couldn't ask for more to be sandwiched in a two-week span. History and process of filmmaking, landmarks, film culture, Malayalam cinema, economics of filmmaking, music in cinema, animation and special effects are just some of the contents in the programme to be held at Vythiri, Wayanad.

A festival of films is one way of looking at it, which take you in and out of the oeuvre of Ray, Kurosawa, Bergman, Godard, Chaplin, Hitchcock among others, through screenings and discussions that help you understand the whys and wherefores of what unspools before you on the screen.

Speaking on films and the interacting with the participants on various aspects will be well-known names Arun Khopkar, Sadanand Menon, Jabeen Merchant, Hariharan, Kamal, Sabu Cyril and a host of experts from the field.

Noted cinematographer Sunny Joseph, is the director of the course while the faculty includes experts on film appreciation and film history.
