REASONS TO SMILE: Johny Antony.
During his youth, Johny Antony had just one dream - to get into films. And to pursue this dream, at the behest of director Joekuttan, he packed his bags and went to Chennai after his pre-degree. After a struggle of almost a year he got his break to assist director Thulasidas for `Chanjattam.' He was an associate director for around 10 films, before he turned an independent director with the hit film `CID Moosa.' His next film was `Kochi Rajavu.'
You, Dileep and the scriptwriter duo Siby K. Thomas and Udayakrishnan seem to be a team.
I have already booked for myself a few interesting themes which Siby and Udayan have. Jokes apart, the four of us started our careers as assistant directors, almost around the same time and we share a certain wavelength. And obviously, it's natural to repeat a hit team, right? Anyway, Mammootty will star in my next film, `Thuruppugulan.' Siby and Udayan, who are busy with Sandhya Mohan's `Kilukkam, Kilukilukkam,' will write the script. The full-fledged team with Dileep, as you called it, will be coming together once again next year for a film titled `Inspector Garud.'
How did `CID Moosa' happen?
I had discussed the story with Siby and Udayan. We were on the lookout for producers who would not compromise on the budget. It was then that Dileep, the hero of the film, agreed to produce it. The film became a hit.
How is `Kochi Rajavu' faring at the box office?
It's true that the film had a rather slow start. Perhaps, many had expected me to bring out another laugh riot after `CID Moosa.' Dileep's bearded look and the action scenes may have got the audiences wondering.
We had targeted family audiences. Soon, they started coming in a big way and it is a profit-earner. The film was has been made on a limited budget without compromising much on the quality.
What is the storyline of `Thuruppugulan' like?
Mammootty's character is a member of the family to whom others turn as a last resort. As the title, which is borrowed from the game of cards, he can turn the events to their favour.
