Saluting the guru

On the occasion of Guru Poornima, N.V. Gopinath will present Naada Sandhya, a sitar recital on July 23. He will be accompanied by Pandit Ravindra Yavagal on the tabla.

Gopinath, a renowned sitarist of Bangalore, began his career in music in1953 learning veena from vidwan G.N. Subramanyam.Gopinath presented veena recitals on his own as well as with his teacher.

After his stint with Carnatic music, Gopinath switched over to Hindustani and started learning both vocal and sitar under Pundit Seshadri Gavai in the late '50s. Gopinath had to then move to Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on work. There he learnt sitar techniques from Pandit Govindrao Kulkarni, disciple of the great Allauddin Khan of Maihar. Gopinath returned to Bangalore in 1969-70 and started learning from Pandit D.S. Garud, the renowned tabla teacher, and continues to take his guidance even today. Gopinath has performed over A.I.R. and Doordarshan.

Ravindra Yavagal, who will accompany Gopinath, was initiated into music by his father, the Late Ramachandra Yavagal, at four.

He continued his training with Veeranna Kamkar of Hubli and later from Pandit Sheshagiri Hanagal.

He has also received guidance from Pundit Lalji Gokhale, disciple of the great tabla maestro Ustad Ahmed Jan Thirakhwa.

A postgraduate in music from Indira Kala Vishvavidyalaya-Khairagarh (M.P.), Ravindra Yavagal is one of the most sought after tabla players.

D.B. Harindra, Hindustani vocalist, and Muddu Mohan, Director, Department of Kannada and Culture, will be present at the programme to be held at Canara Union, 8th Main, Malleswaram, 6 p.m. onwards.
