RHYTHM TIME Artistes from Kuchipudi Kalakshetram performing at Kalabharathi.

The pupils of the local Kuchipudi Kalakshetram, an offshoot of the Kuchipudi Art Academy founded at Chennai by Vempati China Satyam, celebrated guru purnami with fervour in Kalabharathi.

A dance recital devoutly presented by them not only marked the occasion but also turned out to be an tribute to their guru Hari Rama Murthy (principal of the local branch) and in turn his guru Vempati. The former executive director of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, C.S.N. Raju inaugurated the show.

Himabindu, Lakshmipavitra and Kaavya started off on the right note paying obeisance to Lord Ganesa with the popular number in Hamsadhwani, Gajavadana Bedume.

Then came the Suddha Nrityam presented by Swarnalatha, Anuradha, Kalyani and Subba Raju in tune with the Attana jatiswaram. There were solos, Sivashtakam set to Mohana in Khandachapu and an Annamayya composition Kulukaga Nadavaro set to Attana in Thrisra Triputa by Mangala on one hand and Ananda Tandavam in Ragamalika in Aditaalam by V.V.S. Jagannadha Rao.

Marked with impeccable perfection in exhibiting Mudra, Bhangima and movement coupled with empathy in expression, they were the cynosure of all eyes.

In between, there were other items such as Kanjadalayataakshi in Raagamaalika by Himabindu and Lakshmi Pavitra, Koluvaithiva Rangasayee also in Raagamaalika by Swarnalatha, Kalyani, Subbaraju and Aparnaswathi, which delighted all alike.

The programme concluded with a thillana in Putrika ragam presented by Himabindu, Kavya and Aparnaswathi. The danseuses and the single male dancer who together presented the dances seemed to be perfect individually but achieved better synchrony between themselves when they were in a group.

The backdrop of music had expert nattuvangam by Hari Rama Murthy who was very well supported on the mridangam by Kanthilal, good vocals by Sai Savitri, violin by K.V.S. Prasad and flute by T. Atchuta Rao. Make-up by K. Surya Rao was good.
