Kumar Edapal's costumes for `Oridam' won him the State award for costume designing.

CUT FOR THE JOB: Kumar Edapal.
Kumar Edapal, who bagged the State film award for his work in `Oridam,' had once wanted to become an AC mechanic. The 36-year-old Kumar, whose real name is Shantakumar, recalls that he then joined a tailoring shop in Chennai "mainly to learn Tamil."
Career switch
Some time later, at the behest of production executive Narayanan Nagalassery, he became an assistant to costume director Nagarajan in Sathyan Anthikkad's `Ennum Nanmakal.'
His first film as an independent costume designer was `Mazhavillu.' Soon, Kumar started working with some of the reputed names in the film industry. This year three of his films, `Oridam,' `Kazhcha' and `Sancharam' were in contention for the awards.
"I had expected recognition for T.V. Chandran's `Dany' or `Neythukaran,' directed by Priyanandanan," he admits.
Talking about the experience of dressing Mammootty, in `Kazhcha' and `Dany,' he says, "It's quite challenging and, luckily, the directors were quite clear about what they wanted. While doing period films, we do thorough research." Blessy and Pradeep Nair had given him the scripts before the shooting started and that he feels helped him a lot. "Pradeep was particular that the costumes should not resemble some of the Hindi films made on sex workers. "
His costumes for Jayaraj's `Daivanamathil' and Suresh Kannan's `Ottananayam' were also appreciated. With two projects in hand - Anil's `Lokanathan IAS' (starring Kalabhavan Mani) and Sasidharan Pillai's film with Koodiyattom as the backdrop - Kumar has not been able to go to his home in Edapal, since he won the award. But the celebrations have already started, he says.
