Lacklustre fling

A handsome hero, heroine who looks mature, excellent camera work, melodious music, crisp dialogue and effective direction all fall flat in the absence of a matching screenplay. This is what happens with Sri Saravana Creations `February 14.'
Debut director S. P. Hosimin's basics are correct but he should have worked hard to make the screenplay tight and appealing without leaving anything to chance.
It is the usual story of boy (Bharath) meeting a girl (Renuka Menon) and falling in love with her. But she does not know about it. Her project in the college is criticised by every one while his gets the praise.
She decides to go back to the U.S. from where she has come to live with her grandparents. But Mr. X writes to her praising her project and she is pacified.
After a few letters from Mr. X, she starts loving him and confides in her boy friend.
Bharath as the hero has done his job well dancing his way into the hearts of the young girls in the audience. He even fights at the end. Renuka Menon looks mature, at times even older than the hero in some of the scenes. Sooner she picks up the rope (of acting) the better.
Of what purpose is the item number? Neither the choreography nor the clothes worn by Ragasiya are attractive. Vadivelu fails to evoke laughter. Suman Shetty, Santhanam, `Pyramid' Natarajan, Satyan, Raviprakash, Jennifer and Lakshmi have done their bit in the roles allotted.
Rathnavelu's camera work is certainly the highpoint in the film. Eight songs, some of them just half a dozen lines, must have made music director Bharadhwaj work more.
``Laila Majnu," sung by Karthik and Sadana Sargam is hum-worthy. His re-recording seems to have improved very much.
S. P. Hosimin should have spent more time in working with his editor Suresh Urs to trim the film to an absorbing level.
As an understudy to director Shanker, he sure has the spark but is unable make the optimum use of it.
