The 500th birth anniversary of Meera Bai, the bhakti yogini poet was celebrated at Kala Vikas Kendra recently.
Meera was a Rajput queen known for her devotion to Lord Krishna. She was born in about 1500 and was married at the age of 13. But she neglected her marital responsibilities and maintained that it was impossible for her to be married to the king when she was already married to Krishna.
A major change in her life occurred at the time of the death of her husband.
It was customary in those days for a wife to commit sati or self-immolation upon the husband's funeral pyre. She refused to comply, whereupon her in-laws began persecuting her.
So she left the palace and began wandering throughout Rajasthan, preaching and gaining followers. She also went to Vrindavan and Dwarka. She is believed to have died around 1550.
She is known for the many bhajans that she composed. These mystical love poems in praise of Lord Krishna are held in great esteem for their high literary value. They are among the finest devotional poetry in Hindi.
Some of these Meera bhajans like the very well-known Mere to giridhar gopal dusro na koi and Payoji maine naam ratan dhan payo besides Ranaji mai to govind ka gun gana, Here manmohana airi meri naina were rendered with a lot of feeling by renowned singers like Shyamamani Devi, Indrani Mishra, Sailabhama Mohapatra and Bandita Ray.
The musical evening of bhajans opened with veteran Rakhal Mohanty's soulful rendition of Sakhi meri nindan after Kshirod Prasad Mohanty the president of the Nikhil Utkal Sangeeta Shilpi Parishad gave the welcome address.
