Ancient temple needs renovation
MOOLAVAR IDOLS: Sri Venugopalaswamy adorned with padukas, a special feature.
On the southern bank of the river Kudamuruty, a tributary of Cauvery, is a small village, Thillaiambur.
It is near Valangiman, in Kumbakonam taluk of Thanjavur district. Home of many Sanskrit and Tamil scholars, the village is dotted with green fields, creating the right ambience for prayer and meditation.
That the Venugopalaswami temple here is ancient is evident from the disfigured granite statue of Sri Vishnu found in a corner of the temple precincts.
A special feature of Lord Sri Venugopalaswami is that His feet are adorned with padukas (sandals), which is a rarity.
He wears the Shanku Chakra on His Chathurbhuja.
The shrines of Anjaneyar, Perundevi Thayar and Andal were later additions to the temple and samprokshanam was performed in 1996 last.
To facilitate daily pujas and for the maintenance of the temple, Sree Venugopalaswami Public Religious Trust has been formed.
It aims at conducting Veda classes, help organise periodical conferences of scholars and also conduct festivals.
The Thayar and Andal shrines are without a proper shelter and a concrete roof will cost about Rs. 40,000.
The Anjaneyar shrine also needs to be demolished and built and the estimate is Rs. 20,000. The Dwajasthambam, which is about 100 years old, is shaky and has to be refurbished and re-installed.
All this will cost about Rs. 20,000. Samprokshanam will complete the work. Contributions are invited from devotees in the form of cheque/DD drawn in favour of Sri Venugopalaswami Public Religious Trust, Thillaiambur and may be sent to R. Krishnaswamy, secretary-treasurer, Dwaraka Agraharam, Thillaiambur (near Valangiman), Thanjavur - 612 804 (Ph: 04374-264715).
