Homage through music and dance

S. ANNAMALAI

Cultural programme was part of Ramana Jayanti observed in Madurai.

Ramana Kendram, Madurai, and Ramana Maharishi Centre for Learning (RMCL), Bangalore, commemorated the 125th jayanti of Sri Ramana Maharishi by organising `Isai, Natya, Nadaka Vizha' at Lakshmi Sundaram Hall, Madurai, on August 7.

"To make the event more attractive, the organisers had arranged cultural programmes based on the life of the saint," said E. Kondal Raj, vice-president, Ramana Kendram.

Sulochana Natarajan and her team performed 444 `Ramananjali,' a musical offering to Ramana Maharshi.

`Ramananjali' was a musical ensemble comprising vocalists and instrumentalists.

The group had a repertoire of more than 300 songs in different languages, which included compositions by Bhagavan himself, and those written about him by poets like Ganapati Muni, Muruganar and Sadhu Om. The music programme was followed by `Ramana Leela,' a dance drama performed by Sarada of RMCL and Ambika Kameshwar of Ramana Sunritya Aalaya, Chennai. It featured `Ramana yatra' where performer-devotees were taken to places related to Ramana Maharishi like Thiruchuzhi, Dindigul, Madurai and Tiruvannamalai.

Technology was at its best on the stage, adding light, colour and grandeur to the performance.

The divine postures of Ramanar, his birthplace and the `divine' house, the Tiruvannamalai temple and gopurams formed a fascinating background.

"My body trembles in ecstasy on seeing the drama," said Gowriammal, a retired school warden, while Rajadurai Jeyakodi, who had accompanied his friend, said he was thrilled to see the saint come alive on stage.
