DANCING AWAY Kuchipudi danseuse Sujata
Noted Kuchipudi guru, A.B. Balakondala Rao organised a dance recital of her disciple, Sujatha Dantaluri in Kalabharathi recently. It was held under the aegis of the Kuchipudi Kalaakendra founded by Bala.
Sujatha with lithe grace and fluidity in facial expression delighted the audience. However, the same effort with reasonable variation in tempo would have been better.
After the rendition of the traditional prayer Sujatha presented Meenakshi Pancharatnam of Dikshitar (Raagamalika) and Sarasamukhi of Muttaih Bhagavathar (Goudamallaru) in quick succession.
The next item was a bhajan of Tulasi Das (Raagamalika), which she presented along with Bala's son, Aditya.
Then she performed a solo abhinaya for Kulukaganadavaro, a composition of Annamayya set in Athana and a tarangam of Narayanatheerdha set in Bhageswari.
The piece-de-resistance of the evening was the Pravesadaruvu from Bhamaakalaapam, the main stay of the Kuchipudi tradition.
She presented the lyrics Siggayanamma jaaguchesene and the Lekha episode with Aditya again.
The background music had expert nattuvangam by guru Bala, evocative vocals by Dwaram Thyagaraju, mridangam by Bala's other son Ananda Srihari, violin by A. Satyavishal and flute by T. Atchutha Rao. Make-up and costume by Maruthi and Kurma Rao contributed to the show.
Guests of honour were the head of the department of psychiatry hospitals, Geneva; Dr. Carminati and executive director of the Lebenshilfe (Visakhapatnam), T. Saraswathi Devi, who presented mementos to the artistes.
