100 years of song

The Bangalore Gayana Samaja, which made a humble beginning a hundred years ago in 1905, has made strident leaps and is celebrating its centenary. The Samaja for a long time did not have a building of its own. But that did not prevent an M.S. Subbulakshmi, Vasanthakumari or D.K. Pattamal from gracing its podium. They considered it a privilege to sing in this sabha where true connoisseurs always thronged to enjoy music. It was MS who finally brought Gayana Samaja to its feet. Besides a personal contribution of Rs. 40,000, she collected funds for the building through benefit concerts.

The efforts laid foundation for the present Gayana Samaja, which came up in 1946, four decades after the Sabha was founded. Today, the sabha boasts of a state-of-the-art auditorium.

As part of its centenary celebrations it has a series of concerts on August 21, 22 and 23 at the Samaja premises, K.R. Road, Chamarajpet. Gundecha Brothers will present a dhrupad recital on August 21, Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi will present violin recital on August 22.

They will be accompanied by Guruvayur Dorai on the mridanga and M.A. Krishnamurthy on ghata. Sanjay Subramanyam will present a vocal recital on August 23. He will be accompanied by Nagai Muralidhar on violin, K.V. Prasad on the mridanga and B.K.Chandramouli on khanjira.

The concert begins at 6 p.m. on all the three days.
