Film fete begins today

A panorama of international and Indian films will be screened.

Thrissur is all set for `IFFT 2005.' The festival, a joint venture of the Thrissur Corporation and a few film societies in Thrissur, will begin on August 26. About 100 films, including 17 short films, will be screened at Kairali and Sri Theatres. Discussions and meet-the-director programmes will also be organised.
The main attraction of the film festival, among others, is the participation of Budhadeb Dasguptha, who won the national award for the best director for his film `Swapnair Din,' and `Madhu Bhandarkar,' whose `Page Three' won the national award for the best film.
The Italian film `Private' that won the 2004 Locarno Fest Golden Leopard Award (directed by Saverio Costanezo) is the inaugural film.
The focus of the festival is on contemporary Indian cinema, Latin American classics, masters and classics, Asian package and `Indian partition themes.' There will be retrospectives of Serbian director Dusan Makajev, Satyajit Ray, Italian director Lina Vert Muller and French new wave director Francois Truffaut. "The nature of film festivals the world over has changed as it now looks at facts of histories. Globalisation and fascism and its aftermath are the concern of the people and artists, which are well reflected in some of our contemporary films. So our films become more human and spreads the ideology of resistance and these sorts of festivals always help to enlighten the people," says poet and social activist, Prof. K.G. Sankara Pillai, who is the director of the festival.
