Fine portrayal

P. SURYA RAO

The mythological play was staged in the `padyanatakam' genre, which is still popular in A.P.

The excellently staged mythological drama that the Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam presented as a padyanatakam proved once again that there is no dearth of patronage for this genre, a speciality of Andhra Pradesh.

The drama produced by Saveri Samskritika Samstha of Hyderabad was staged as part of the weekly cultural programme series instituted in important cities in the State by the Department of Cultural Affairs and was staged at the Kshetrayya Kala Kshetram.

The Samskritika Samstha made an admirable effort in presenting the story of Srinivasa kalyanam, the divine wedding of Srinivasa and Padmavathi (lord Venkateswara and Alivelu Manga) with a fine portrayal, good music, appropriate costumes and fine team work.

The story began with the short-tempered sage Brugu who enters vaikuntam where lord Vishnu and Lakshmi are in the midst of a conversation and ignore the presence of Bhrugu.

The infuriated sage curses Vishnu and as a consequence, Vishnu is born as Srinivasa in bhoolokam and Lakshmi Devi who leaves vaikuntam in a huff, is born as the daughter of Akasha Raju.

Divine union

They fall in love with each other and the rest of the story unfolds and ends with the colourful and divine union of Srinivasa and Alivelu Manga who, in the form of lord Venkateswara and Alivelu Manga make their abode in the seven hills of Tirupathi.

Written by Manchikanti Venkateswarlu and slickly directed by Rayapati Asirvadam, the drama was well received by the crowd.

Nagabhushanam as Srinivasa, Vemuri Syamasundera Rao as Narada, N. Bhavani as Lakshmi and Padmavathi and Ashirvadam as Bhrigu maharshi gave exemplary performances.

Other characters also were well played by Gabriel, Pattabhi, Vijayalakshmi, Subbalakshmi, Jangayya Goud, Jeevaratnam and Swathi. Good musical support was another asset.
