Gangadhar Meher (1862-1924) was born in a weaver family on Sravan Purnima day at Barapalli in western Orissa. As a harbinger of modern Oriya poetry, Meher made monumental contribution to Oriya language and literature. With a diction that belonged to the roots of Oriya ethos, the poet handled with felicity the subject of nature, and introduced folk elements into the then narrative Oriya poetry.
A poet, social reformer and teacher, Gangadhar Meher shone like a star in the literary firmament with his numerous literary creations particularly the epic Tapaswini. Some of his other masterpieces are Kichakabadha and Pranayballari. He set the poetic and linguistic standards for the modern Oriya poets to follow. Chirasandhana, a newspaper with pronounced literary leanings, paid a tribute to this great poet by observing a State-level celebration of the poet's birthday. The newspaper editor Parthasarathi Ajay Barik established Meher's uniqueness as a nature poet. Meher's contribution to the integration of Oriya culture was highlighted.
