`Kalidasa Natyotsav' from Saturday

G.S. PAUL

The five-day fete will focus on Kalidasa and his plays.

Natanakairali, Irinjalakuda, is organising `Kalidasa Natyotsav' and international symposium at its Natyagriham in Irinjalakuda from September 3.

The highlight of the festival is the presentation of `Sakuntalam,' spread over five days, from `Naandi' to `Bharatavakyam' in the typical traditional format of Koodiyattom. This will be followed by `Vikramorvaseeyam' (Koodiyattom) and `Kumarasambhavam' (Mohiniyattom). Sukumar Azhikode, M.N. Vijayan, K.G. Poulose, Swami Vinayachaitanya, Ma Ke and Peter Oskarson will present papers on Kalidasa. Ma Ke, a member of Beijing Opera, will be the first Chinese danseur to visit Kerala. Oskarson is the director of World Theatre Project in Sweden.

Produced by Natanakairali in January 2002 and directed by G. Venu, `Sakuntalam' is a landmark production in Koodiyattom as it embraced the full text containing the seven acts.

The eleven-hour extravaganza is the only Indian play of its kind that had been staged in three major festivals of the world, including Torino Settembre Musica, Italy, in September 2004, Atelierd d' ethnomusicologie, Geneva in October, 2004, and Moroshita Studio Tokyo in August 2005.
