The seventh annual `Bhajanothsavam' was recently held at Kalpathy, Palakkad. The four-day festival was marked by the chanting of the Narayaneeyam, recital of Ashtapadi, Abhangs and Divyanaamam and spiritual discourses. The culmination was the Seetha Kalyanam that was held on the last day.
Abhangs
Abhang, (which means eternal), has become an integral part of bhajan festivals. Composed by Maratha saints in pursuit of bliss, it epitomises a perfect blend of music and devotion, transcending linguistic and geographical barriers.
This year, the organisers succeeded in roping in Sanjay Nadkarni of Mumbai, who is a disciple of Kishori Amonkar and Jithendra Abhisheki and also a gold medallist in music from Bombay University.
Since Marati is his mother tongue, he sang the Abhangs with the proper pronunciation, pauses, and with utmost devotion. Abhangs of Tukkaram, Kabirdas and Eknath were sung in the ragas Yaman, Bhoop, Chandrakauns, Jaunpuri.
He was accompanied by Mahesh Kamath (harmonium) Sooraj Seth (tabla) and Kadayanelloor Venkatesh (pakhavaj).
Ashtapadi by Rajasimha Bhagavathar, bhajans by Bombay Hari and Divyanaamam by Udayaloor Kalyanaraman were also held on different days.
