Poetic drama unfolded on stage

Neat histrionic display marked the staging of `Rajamudrika'.

DEFT HANDLING The play exemplified good teamwork.
Sri Satya Sai Cultural Arts, Chinna Waltair, staged a poetic drama Rajamudrika in Kalabharathi last week. It was an adaptation of Kalidasa's Shakunthalam. The dialogues in prose were written by writer-poet M.V.V. Satyanarayana linking appropriately the key versified versions from the play on the same subject by Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu. A couple of poetic dialogues of Kotturthi Bhaskara Rao were also included.
A few inconsistencies in diction in the dialogues in prose scripted by Satyanarayana made it this not-too-happy match between the two versions. Nonetheless, thanks to the careful handling achieving good teamwork with ιlan by the director Botta Venugopala Rao and coupled with neat display of histrionic talent by all actors without exception, the two-hour duration sustained enough interest in the audience.
The cast comprised T.V. Rama Rao - Kanvamaharshi, M. Subrahmanyam - Dushyantha, K. Appa Rao - the king's companion, G.L. Naidu - Saradwatha, M. Narayana Murty - Doorvasa muni, V. Sangameswara Rao - Kumbhalaka, K. Vijayalakshmi - Sakuntala, V. Jagadeeswari - Priyamvada, Sivajyothi - Anasuya and B. Kousik - Bharatha. The backdrop of music had Vaddadi Srinivas on harmonium, D. Rajesh (keyboard) and M. Srinivas (tabla). Stage decor by S. Venkata Rao was appealing. Earlier, doyens of theatre Duvvi Sanyasi Rao and director Botta Venugopala Rao were felicitated.
