MYSTIC APPEAL OF ODISSI: `Spellbound'.

Ramli Ibrahim and his Sutra Dance Theatre will perform, `Spellbound,' presented by Forum Art Gallery, (No.57, Padmanabha Nagar, 5th Street, Adyar Ph: 52115596) at the Museum Theatre, on September 3 and 4, at 7 p.m.

On September 3, 11 a.m., the Consul General of Malaysia in Chennai, Mr. Rosli Ismail, will launch Ramli's book, `Ramli, The Heart of Sutra,' which documents the author's artistic pursuits, at Forum. Mr. Ismail will also be the guest of honour at the performance that evening at the Museum Theatre. An exhibition of A. V. Ilango's paintings on `Spellbound,' titled `Under the Spell,' will follow the book launch.

The programme on the first day (September 3) will throw light on the classical repertoire and the mystic appeal of the Odissi dance form. Works of gurus such as Durga Charan Ranbir will be showcased alongside the classics of Deba Prasad Das.

The show on September 4 will have the Sutra Dance Theatre featuring contemporary modern pieces inspired by Odissi and Bharatanatyam.

Besides artistic director Ramli Ibrahim, `Spellbound' includes Sutra dancers Anushya Nair, Tan Mei Mei, Nishah Devi Govind, Divya Nair, Sivagamavalli Selvarajan and guest artist Rahul Acharya. Rahul, a disciple of Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, is a Bhubaneshwar based dancer.

Ramli Ibrahim, teacher of Bharatanatyam and Odissi in Malaysia, is a force to reckon with in the Malaysian theatre circuit. He studied Bharatanatyam under Adyar K. Lakshmanan and Odissi under Guru Deba Prasad Das.
