Boosting dance for a decade

Natyarangam, which will be celebrating its ninth dance festival from September 5, is actively involved in encouraging young talent.

Natyarangam, the dance wing of the Narada Gana Sabha Trust, is now 10 years old. The association has come a long way since then. They have been instrumental in identifying and promoting talent through the years.
The committee is quick to add that it consciously encourages male dancers, anddoesnot discriminate between various dance schools or styles.
Annual camps on Bharatanatyam titled `Natya Sangraham' have been conducted in Thennangur. Professor C. V. Chandrasekhar has been the convenor for the past six years.
`Jana Bharatham' is an outreach programme the committee has recently kick-started where dance is presented in schools, orphanages, old age homes, and so on.
From the Ramayana
Besides the monthly programme through the year, where a student performs and the Guru conducts a lecture demonstration the next day, annual thematic dance festivals are also held.
The ninth such festival is the Ramayana Bharatham, to be held from September 5 to 11 (7 p.m. daily), at Narada Gana Sabha. A different kaandam from different Ramayanas will be presented every day.
The performances will be preceded by a discourse on the relevant chapters by a resource person.
The participating dancers are: Rhadha who opens the festival with Swati Tirunal's Bhavayami Raghuramam. Others to perform are M. S. Hariharan, Lavanya Ananth, Priya Murle, Roja Kannan, Gayathri Balagurunathan, A. Lakshman, Lakshmi Ramaswamy, Uma B. Ramesh, Narthaki Nataraj, Sangeeta Iswaran, Aadith Narayan and Ganga Thampi.
Apart from eminent Gurus and dancers, Natyarangam will also honour Mrinalini Sarabhai, founder-director of Darpana Academy, Ahmedabad.
