Small screen aspirations

SHOBA NAIR

Sajitha Beti is an up-and-coming actress who has made a mark on the mini-screen.

ON THE RISE: Sajitha Beti

Sajitha Beti's route to success has been rather unusual, it is through her negative role as Kavya in Balaji Telefilms' `Kavyanjali.' "There is affection in hatred too," says the teenager. She is confident of scaling heights of success with her versatility.

"I had not been getting very good roles, but the expectations of people kept me going, and now I have many good roles in hand," says Sajitha Beti. She donned the greasepaint in the mid-nineties as a child artiste in a Doordarshan telefilm `Tahsildar Thamarakshan.' Her father, Sayyed Abdul Gaffoor Sahib, an employee of State Bank of India, produced the telefilm. After acting as a child artiste in about 15 serials such as `Sreeraman,' `Sreedevi,' and `Sparsham,' she graduated to essaying roles in serials such as `Aalipazham,' `Porutham,' and `Sindoora Rekha.'

While still in her teens, Sajitha Beti donned the role of a leukaemia-afflicted young mother in Balu Kiriath's `Thalolam.'

That is not all, Sajitha is thrilled about her role as Amala, in a serial that will soon hit television, `Anasooya.' Veteran actress K. R. Vijaya will play the role of Sajitha's mother in the serial. Another role that she is looking forward to is her role as Unniyarcha in `Poothuram Veedu,' which will also soon hit the mini-screen. For Sajitha, her career has not confined to television. Sajitha has tried her hand at acting in films too.

Her debut film was Sajan's `Mr and Mrs' and later went on to act in some other films such as `Oomapenninu Uriyada Paiyyan,' `Thenkashi Pattanam,' `Melevariathe Malakha Pennungal.' Although Sajitha has won several awards, what matters for Sajitha is the appreciation that she gets from the audience.

Such is the response of the audience, she says some viewers have reprimanded her for being rude to her screen sister Anjali (Priya Raman). "I call her didi, and in reality we get along really well," says Sajitha of her relationship with Priya Raman.

Sajitha Beti nurses dreams of acting in Tamil and Hindi music albums, and Hindi films too. "Why not, after all Hindi is my mother tongue," says a very confident Sajitha.

* * *

After a gap of almost a decade, K. R. Vijaya, is all set to appear in the serial `Seventham,' `Anasooya.'

"At present, I cannot reveal the details. I am doing the role of a strong-willed widowed mother of three young girls. I am eagerly looking forward for its next schedule within a month. This is a good break since I have been keeping away from the tinsel world for quite sometime."
