The sound of music

Recitals and staging dotted the cultural kaleidoscope here last week.

Last week was a saturation of cultural programmes at various venues in Vijayawada. Swarajhari, the monthly music Sabha presented a melodious vichitra veena concert by Emani Lalita Krishna of Hyderabad at Sri Sivaramakrishna Kshetram. This talented artiste shows equal prowess in playing veena and mandolin alike. Lalita Krishna received her training from her mother Lakshmisuramma, a vainik and further lessons from veteran vidwan Annavarapu Ramaswami. Her guru in Vichitra Veena is the famous Ravikiran.

Lalita Krishna gave a good beginning to her concert with Gajavadana in Sriranjani. Varanarada in Vijayasri and Swathi Thirunal's Sarasijanabha murare in Thodi followed it. Lalita showed fine expertise on her instrument while playing the major items Giripai Nelakonna in Sahana and the ragam, tanam, pallavi in Latangi. She had good support on the violin by B.V.Durga Bhavani, B.V.S.Prasad on the mridangam and K.V.Ramakrishna on ghatam.

Ajjada remembered

Ajjada Adibhatla Narayana Das of Vizianagaram is a noted name in the field of Harikatha ganam . He was also a poet, linguist, musician and scholar. He wrote and composed a number of popular Harikathas and trained scores of disciples in Harikatha ganam. He was the first principal of Maharajahs Music College at Vizianagaram.

His sishya prasishyas celebrated his 142nd Jayanthi at Sri Seetarama Kalyana Mandapam with the co-operation of T.T.D.Dharma Prachara Parishat, efficiently organised by veteran Harikatha exponents Burra Sivaramakrishna Bhagavatar and Ambatipudi Sivaramakrishna Sarma Bhagavatar. The first day's programme was dedicated to well-known Bhagavatar of yesteryear Late Neti Lakshminarayana Bhagavatar, a senior and direct disciple of Narayana Das. In the inaugural function, Ambatipudi Sivaramakrishna Sarma Bhagavatar was felicitated by noted violinist and vocalist Neti Srirama Sarma, in memory of his father Neti Lakshminarayana.

Impressive dance-drama

As its monthly programme, the Sidhardha Kala Peetham presented a fine dance-drama Budham Saranam Gachami written, produced and directed by Ananda ShankarJayant of Hyderabad. The dance-drama, which began with depicting the birth of Buddha, came to a close with Gouthama Buddha's preachings. Prema Ramamurtyprovided excellent vocal support, with fine support from the instrumentalists.
