In love with teaching

Gajender Shewalkar's tribute to music is through teaching the tabla, an instrument he excels in playing.

YOUNG GUN Shewalkar proves to be a true heir to the legacy of his family.

Born in a family of art and culture — his grandfather Vasudeva Rao Lasinkar, one of the leading and well known harmonists in his times, and his father Prof. Bhaskar Shewalker, retired head of theatre arts from University of Hyderabad and a well known theatre exponent — Gajender Shewalker, the young tabla master was destined to be an exponent in his own field.

Gajender chose the percussion instrument to learn and master at the age of 16. He started his training under the senior tabla vidwan, late Pt. Lal Giriji and later learnt from Ustad Shabbir Nissar. Though he performed at foreign countries such as the U.S., Canada and Malaysia, his main interest was to impart training to the younger generation.

Working as a lecturer at the Badruka College of Music and also associated with the school Oakridge International, he imparts training to many students on the tabla and the tradition of Hindustani music. His unique way of teaching the tabla has made him a popular teacher. Many of his students are now performing artistes on television, radio and the movies and also performing in foreign countries. Some of them are teachers themselves.

Gajender who uses the latest technology to tutor students abroad says that through his teaching he enables students to succeed in music examinations conducted by the Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya.
