MESMERISING Ustad Bismillah Khan to grace Bangalore
The celebrated Ustad of the Indian sub-continent who took the shehnai out of the temples on to the stage, Bismillah Khan will be performing here again. Bismillah Khan, who lives in Varanasi, one of the world's oldest cities and the holiest of Hindu pilgrim centres, is revered as a great symbol of India's plurality. A devout Shia Muslim, he has equal faith in Hindu deities like Balaji and Saraswati.
The Benares Hindu University and Shantiniketan have awarded him honorary doctorates. He has also received the Tansen Award of the Madhya Pradesh government and the Padma Vibhushan award. He has toured the world and played at many capitals, and also recorded several albums, some with other legends like Ustad Vilayat Khan.
Ustad Bismillah Khan will be performing on September 25 at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan, Vasanthnagar, 6.30 p.m. The ustad will be felicitated the same day by Governor T.N. Chaturvedi. The concert is being organised by Rhythms Institute of Fine Arts, a cultural academy promoting music. The Institute will also award the Shri K.S.H. Hazari Prasad Memorial Kala Sevak Puraskar to leading musicians Bale Khan and M. Kodandaram.
