Young and talented

Kanaka's abhinaya and expression captivated the audience at Sri Sowriraja Perumal temple in Tirukkannapuram, Nagapattinam.



PLEASING: S. Kanaka.

The Bharathanatyam performance of 12-year-old S. Kanaka thrilled the huge audience gathered at the Sri Sowriraja Perumal temple in Tirukkannapuram village, Nagapattinam district on Monday last.

Kanaka is the daughter and disciple of S. Uma of Sankaranatyalaya, Thiruveezhimizhalai, Tiruvarur district.

She danced as her music guru, T. N. Ramesh Kumar of Thiruveezhimizhalai, played the nagaswaram for more than three hours.

The programme was called `Nadha Bharatha Sangamam' to mark the samprokshanam of the temple. Uma did the nattuvangam and choreography for Kanaka.

Young Kanaka is the recipient of several awards and titles including Tamil Nadu Government's `Ilamani' award, `Natya Peroli', `Thillana Mohanambal' and so on. She began with the `mallari' played by Ramesh Kumar in Gambira Nattai in Kanda jathi Thripudai thalam.

Excellent abhinaya

Kanaka's expressions and excellent abhinaya for `Devi Mahatmiyam' and `Ramayana' impressed the audience.

Kanaka depicted Dasavatharam in a pleasing manner and captivated the audience by balancing a pot of water while dancing jathi for 15 minutes.

She also danced for more than 10 other songs in the ragas Abheri, Hindolam and so on Ramesh Kumar was ably accompanied by Thirupunkur Ramanathan in another nagaswaram, Govindara Pillai on the tavil, Injikkudi Mani on the mridangam, Karaikkal Suka Pavalan on the violin and Thirukkannapuram Kamaraj on the morsing.
