Poetry in song

The evening felicitated both singer and composer.

The Sewa and Sadbhavana Associations presented at Ravindra Bharati a ghazal night, showcasing the works of nearly two-dozen Hyderabadi poets. The specialty of the event was inviting the poet whose ghazal was about to be rendered onto the stage, felicitating him with a shawl and garland and seating him beside the singer who then rendered his piece. The ghazal singers were well known - Khan Ather, Jasbir Kaur and Nayyar Jagiri. The theatre was filled to the brim. The wah..wahs for every intense poetic line raised the literary spirit of the auditorium. And the applause was not just for the excellent rendition by Ather Khan but also for the beauty of the lines and their poetic content. The programme was arranged in memory of the late newspaper editors, Abid Khan, (Siassat), Yudhvir (Hindi Milap), Mahamood Ansari (Munsif) and Mahboob Hussain (Jigar). Jahed Ali Khan of Siasat graced the occasion.

Tajammal Hussain, a well known cultural ambassador, presided over the musical function. Sardar Ansari's Do Jahnme Koi Kya Rakha - Kuch Nahin, Dard-e-dil ki Dawa Deejiye of Basheer Amjad, Halka Halka Nasha Jisme - Halki Khushboo of Hasan Farooq, Har Mulaqat Mein Seene se Lagane Waale of Mosim Jalgani, were some of the impressive poetic works of the program. Ather sang melodiously and with feeling. Amzaj, Ateeb Aijaz, Hassan Farook and Khaja Shauq were some among the many poets who figured in the ghazal night. Jasjit Kaur too performed well. The chairman, Urdu Academy, Rahmulla Khan Niazi was present and felicitated the poets.
