New choreography
The Natya Ballet Centre presented two evenings of choreographic work this past week. The first was `Spellbound' by Ramli Ibrahim.
A collection of pieces based on traditional themes, the choreography was in the Odissi medium. The dancers were Ramli Ibrahmi, Anushya Nair, Tan Mei Mei, Nisha Devi Govind, Divya Nair, Sivagamavalli Selvarajan, Rahul Acharya, Shivani Wazir, and Jyoti Shrivastava.
The second evening featured a new production by Navtej Johar: `Fana'a: Ranjha Revisited'. Fusing images from two narrative traditions belonging to the North and South of India - the legend of Heer-Ranjha and Kutrala Kuravanji respectively - the choreography takes a non-narrative approach. Danced by Navtej Johar, Radhica Laukaran and Anil Panchal, the production has music direction and singing by acclaimed Sufi singer Madan Gopal Singh, along with Carnatic vocalist and composer G. Elangovan and a varied orchestra of instruments from North and South India and the West.
Music Programmes
Apart from an evening of sufi music and dance by Swaranjali, Habitat Centre also presented a Hindustani vocal recital by Ram Narain, Jha, disciple of Pandit Sarathi Chatterjee. Songs and recitations by Jayati Ghosh and Avery Chourey (in Bengali) were also rendered earlier this week. And at the IIC auditorium Chandrima Roy from Lucknow presented a sarod recital.
