Friendship matters

VIJAY GEORGE

Vinayan is canning his latest film `Boyy friennd,' which has new faces in the lead.

WORK IN PROGRESS: Mamu Koya, Lalu Alex, Lakshmi Gopalswami and Sreenivasan on the sets of `Boyy friennd.'

The room on the first floor of the Chalakudy Rest House has got a face-lift.

There are a few posters of Sania Mirza, George Michael, Steffi Graf and the gorgeous Jennifer Lopez. Thrown in are a few clothes, books, a computer and a couple of beds and the room is transformed into one in a girl's hostel.

This will be the hostel room of actors Madhumitha and Honey in Vinayan's forthcoming film `Boyy friennd,' spelt with an additional `y' and `n,' to make "the title sound more cute."

"The life of a mother and son is the focus of the film, with the campus as the backdrop. The young mother, who is in her mid-thirties, is employed in the Secretariat and her son, the film's hero, a 17-year-old student, are more like friends. Their fortunes take a dramatic turn after a minister, with whom the boy had a spat, gets killed. The investigation begins and the boy is indicted in the case," narrates the director.

On the sets, cinematographer Jibu Jacob is busy directing his assistants. Madhumitha, who is Lekha in the film, has a tough time learning the lengthy dialogues.

Associate director Ashok Pandalam explains the meaning of some of the lines to her, even as Vinayan and scriptwriter J. Pallassery watch the rehearsals on the monitor .

Manikuttan, who plays the role of the young `Kayamkulam Kochunni,' in a serial, is Ramesh, the hero of the film, and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy portrays the role of his mother, Nandini Prasad. Sreenivasan is `Idiyan Kartha,' the police officer who eventually solves the murder mystery. Mukesh essays the minister, Natesan. The star cast also includes Lalu Alex, Jagadeesh, Captain Raju, Harisree Asokan, Mamukkoya and Bindu Panikkar.

Madhumitha, who acted in the Satyaraj starrer `Englishkaran' and Honey, a class 10 student from Moolamattam, who makes her debut in the film, helps Ramesh flee from the police. Honey is Julie in the film. "Our youngsters have proved that a boy and girl can share a healthy friendship, without being romantically involved," believes Vinayan.

How is it directing these relatively fresh faces?

"Although it's comparatively difficult to market such films, when compared to superstar ventures, it is easier to mould fresh actors into various characters and they will look convincing in such roles," feels Vinayan.

Next project

Vinayan is already thinking about his next venture, a mix of fact and fantasy, in which the hero will be a 10 year old. He gets a magic ring, which has amazing powers. Tamil actor Satyaraj will act as a police officer in the film.

Meanwhile, Vinayan is busy completing the Tamil version of his earlier venture, `Adbhudadweepu.'

`Boyy friennd' is slated for an early November release. M. Jayachandran has composed the music for the film produced by Vidyasagar under the banner of Harikrishna productions. The lyrics are by Kaithapram.
