In memory of Jashua
The moment the name of poet Gurram Jashua is mentioned, one remembers the many verses they read in their high school text books. Gabbilam is one of them. Humanism reflects in all his works and this great poet is respected by all sections of literature lovers. The first Gjnanapeeth awardee in Telugu literature, Viswanadha Satyanarayana, held Jashua's works in high esteem.
Some of Jashua's verses had also gone into popular mythological play Harischandra especially those in the cremation grounds scene.
In Jashua's name, a literary foundation was functioning for quite sometime now. And the foundation has instituted a literary award with Rs. 1 lakh cash prize which was being presented to eminent poets from different Indian languages chosen by a committee.
This year, the award went to Kannada poet Dr. Chandrasekar Kambar. And the awarding ceremony held at Jubilee Hall in Public Gardens was addressed by Governor Sushil Kumar Shinde as chief guest. He presented the `Jashua Sahitya Puraskaram - 2005.' to Dr. Chandrasekar Kambar. Then he ventured into reciting some of the verse lines of Jashua's Gabbilam to a good applause by audience. Even people like Mahatma Gandhi lauded Jashua, he said. Presiding over the award function, noted poet Dr. C. Narayana Reddy said that Jashua was the victim of casteism but ultimately emerged as one of the greatest poets who won the hearts of all, irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
Cinare recited some of the verses highlighting the richness in Jashua's poetic output. Gabbilam is a book through which he sent message to Lord Siva about what was going on in the name of religion.
Joint secretary, Department of Culture, Government of Karnataka, Markandapuram Srinivas, introduced Chandrasekar. Dr. Chandrasekar thanked the foundation and its founder secretary Hemalatha Lavanam, Jashua's daughter.
