Silver screens tilt southwards too

Delhi cinemas become cosmopolitan with regular screenings of South Indian films.

CAPITAL INTEREST The Rajini-starrer "Chandramukhi" found an audience in New Delhi.
Give it to globalisation. With the call centres booming and networking here to stay, the demography of the country is changing. People are carrying their culture as baggage literally. Result, cinema from different parts of the country is coming to the Capital.
Earlier it was just acclaimed Bangla films like "Choker Bali" or a Marathi film like "Anahat" riding on their Bollywood star value that had Delhiites swooning.
Today even Tamil hits like "Chandramukhi" and "Mayavi" are finding an audience. In recent times the Rajinikant and Surya starrers have managed decent collections.
"The idea is to address a niche audience and offer programme differentiation," says Tusshar Dhingra of PVR Cinemas. "It's true Bangla films which come with Bollywood stars appeal to a large section of people outside the Bangla speaking audience. The South Indian films' reach, as of now, is limited to people of the region who are staying in the Capital. We release most of the films in our cinemas around South Delhi," adds Dhingra. He says though most of the times they are governed by footfalls, here the attempt is to offer variety to the audience.
"We don't limit such films to morning shows and spread them evenly. Also, we are not limiting ourselves to a particular genre." A festival in the offing? "Not a bad idea."
