From Down Under
Suchitra Film Society has a festival of Australian films beginning today. In this festival on till October 9, the films that will be screened are Australian Rules directed by Paul Goldman on October 7, 6.45 p.m. This film is about two Australian communities — Goonyas (whites) and Nungas (blacks) and how they come together for a game of football. The game is underlined with racism and class warfare that is irrelevant to whether the team wins or not.
Black and White directed by Craig Lahiff and The Tracker by Rolf De Heer on October 8 at 5.30 p.m. onwards. The former is based on a true story that created news in 1959. The story revolves around a young man named Max Stuart
who is convicted based on the evidence for murder of a nine-year-old girl. The Tracker is the story about a native Australian who is accused of murdering a white woman.
Rabbit-Proof Fence by Phillip Noyce, is also a true story of Molly Craig, a young black Australian girl who leads he younger sister and cousin in as escape from an official government camp, that trains young girls as domestic help. Storm Boy by Henri Safrah and Beaker Morant by Bruce Beresford is set during the Boer War where three Australian lieutenants are on trail for shooting Boer prisoners. These two films will be screened on October 9 from 3 p.m. on wards.
