A village romance

S. R. ASHOK KUMAR

Action, romance and sentiment `Maja' is a happy mix.

GAY ABANDON: Vikram and Asin in `Maja.'

"It is every inch a village love story and we are not going to shoot in Chennai at all," said director Shafi, who has done four films in Malayalam. Thus when info reached that the unit of Rockline Entertainments Private Limited `Maja' was shooting in AVM Studio one wondered what was happening. The best way to find out what was to be there. Here goes...

Heroine Asin and her father Malayalam Murali are deep in a discussion. It is a patch up shot as the film is almost through.

Shafi, preoccupied with the trip to Austria, says, "We are going there for a song. On the one hand dubbing is going on. And on the other editing. I am racing against time to finish the film and release it on Deepavali, which means we have finished work in six months. There are five songs (music composed by Vidyasagar), three of which were picturised n Tamil Nadu — at Pollachi, Udumalpet and Karaikkudi. Mysore and Srirangapattinam are the other locations. The fifth one is in Austria. As I wanted countryside and a pleasant weather we are going there. Our first choice was Ireland. But we heard that the weather conditions are not as good and so settled for Austria." He is also in charge of screenplay and dialogue.

Entertainer

Now for the storyline. Written by P. Nagarambalam (the Malayalam film is titled as "Thommanum Makkalum" meaning Thomman and his children) is about the relationship between a father (Manivannan) and his son (Vikram).

With Asin providing the romance factor Maja is a thorough entertainer.

Vadivelu takes care of the comedy and with Vikram around there will not be dearth of action.

Vikram said, "The film has come out well and the artistes — Manivannan, Pasupathi, Asin, Vadivelu, Malayalam Murali and Ilavarasu — have lived up to the expectations of the director. It is a light hearted comedy with action and sentiment in it."

Asin was in cloud nine, what with three of her films releasing on Deepavali. `` `Maja' is for the entire family," she asserts. ``The village belle role was something novel and I enjoyed the experience," she adds.

Camera is handled by Balasubramaniam and V. T. Vijayan has done the editing for the film produced by Rockline Venkatesh.
