The Prananath Samman was bestowed on six people selected from various art streams.

THE STALWARTS The six who were chosen for the award.

Prananath Patnaik was not only a freedom fighter but also a social activist in the true sense, involved in promoting welfare measures for the common man. So it was in the fitness of things that Prananath Memorial Trust instituted awards in his name to be conferred on personalities in different fields.

This year, the fields chosen were literature, dance, cinema, art and academics - fields that Patnaik had been associated with in his lifetime. His popularity has ensured that schools and colleges named after him have come up at his birthplace Khurda. The memorial trust chose six persons for awarding Prananath Samman for the year 2005 - Odissi dancer Ileana Citaristi, film actor Anu Choudhury, children's writer Gangotri Devi, lyricist Debendra Das and artist Binode Moharana. Litterateur Srinivas Mishra got the Manjari Devi literary award instituted in the name of Patnaik's wife. The governor of Orissa graced the function as the chief guest and Manorama Mohapatra, poet and the acting editor of the Oriya daily Samaj spoke on Patnaik and his contribution to various fields in Orissa.
