Meghana shows class

A. RAMALINGA SASTRY

Talasila Meghana came up with excellent performance in a recital organised by her guru and parents.

TWINKLE TOES Meghana shows her expertise in Bharatanatyam

An entertaining evening it was last Sunday at VUDA Children Theatre, which played host to a dance recital by Talasila Meghana. A X std pupil of the Timpany School, she has been learning Bharatanatyam in Nrityakalabharati of the Bharatiya Vidya Kendra under the tutelage of its principal and noted dance exponent, Natyacharya Avasarala Rukmaji Rao, for more than six years now.

Impressed with her public performances, which included a few ballets presented along with other students of institute, Meghana's guru and her parents, Vijaya and Vijaya Mohan, organised a full-fledged solo. It was a devotional offering, fulfilling all requirements of the traditional format of an arangetram. Starting with Pushpanjali, followed by Alaripu set in Khandagathi, she expertly presented the pure nritta-oriented number Jathiswaram in Abhogi in Roopakatalam. The Sabdam in Ragamalika in Misrachapu next brought out a neat balance of nritta and nritya. Minor lapses in continuity of mood while executing the jathis interspersed between pallavi, anupallavi and the charanams in the varnam (Dhanyasi in Chaturasra Triputa) notwithstanding, she gave a thrilling account of herself in executing the abhinaya. The tailpiece comprising the popular song Anandanatamaduvar Thillai (Purvikalyani roopakam), Dikshitar's Simhasanasthite, Madhurai Krishnan's Brindavanasaranga Thillana and Annamayya's Mangalam made up the grand finale.

Nattuvangam by Rukmaji Rao was well supported by T. Suguna Rani. Mridangam support by Y.P.S. Madhu Babu along with T.N. Chaitanya on ghatam was evocative. Vocal by M. Venkata Rao was an asset. Raja Rao on flute, Lakshmikantham on veena and K.V.S. Prasad on the violin were equally good. Make-up by Surya Rao was excellent. Guests of honour AU Sanskrit Professor, G. Akkubhatla Sarma, and noted editor of the popular magazine Mihira, M.R.L Rao, were all praise for Meghana.
