Devotional fervour

The Sarannavaratri festival held at Shankara Mutt auditorium featured some good vocal concerts, besides a Nadaswaram recital and a dance drama.

The Sarada Sarannavaratri season, which ends with Dasara, is always marked with a nine-day festival, with special programmes eulogising Goddess Durga.

The festival held at Shankara Mutt auditorium in Nallakunta, being known for these festivities, was thronged by devotees. There was a Nadaswaram recital by M. Venugopal and party, and a dance drama titled Girija Kalyanam.

Rendition of devotionals by Vedavathi Prabhakar was a special event as she concentrated on the right kind of compositions to time with such festivities.

She opened her concert with the popular sloka Manikya Veenam and then rendered a song on the Goddess Rajarajeswari, presiding deity of the Sringeri Math, set in Arabhi.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati's Sanskrit slokam and Bharathee Theertha Swamy's composition in praise of Adi Sankara were a good selection for the event.

Being good at the rendition of Annamayya compositions, Vedavati presented some on this occasion. Oka Pari Kokopari in Kharaharapriya, Itadokade in Hamsadhwani and Palukutenela Talli in Abheri were a delight to listen to.

Adi Sankara's Sringeri Nilaye Sharade in Varali, and also his slokas, Chidananda Roopa Sivoham Sivoham and Amba Nee Kide Haarathi in Khamas were other highlights of her repertoire.

The orchestral support by Dattatreya on flute, Ramesh Pai on violin, Ramanamurthi on the tabla and P. Satyendra Nath on the rhythms elevated the concert.

This was followed by devotional music by Parvatha Vardhani and Party. Jaya Jaya Durge, a tarangam of Narayana Theertha in Arabhi, Dikshitar's Pancha Shatpeetha Vasini in Karnataka Devagandhari, Annamacharya's Brahma Kadigina in Mukhari were some well-presented compositions.

Ramana Murthy accompanied the devotional concert on violin and Jayaram Kumar was on mridangam.

Pleasing recital

The celebrations also featured an interesting veena recital by a husband and wife team, on the day the presiding deity Raja Rajeswari was decorated as Gajalakshmi. The couple that impressed with their show was Ayyagari Shyamsundaram and Jayalakshmi.

Ayyagari family is well known for veena players. Shyamasundaram is presently Principal, Government College of Music and Dance, Vijayawada. Jayalakshmi too hails from the Pappu family, known for high standard vainikas.

The concert on this occasion was a bit delayed to avoid the sound levels produced by devotees thronging the temple.

Shyamasundar's play especially was marked by pure musical sounds and shruti conformity. It was pure note all the way that ruled their concert. Jayalakshmi too added her own bit of imagination in crucial parts.

Kanjadalayatakshi in Kamalamanohari opened the show. The swaraprasthara they did in this specialty for veena was played well and followed it with the kriti Himadri was most notable aspect.

Ananda Bhairavi was essayed a bit and in which they presented Shyama Shastri's O Jagadamba. However the essay of Abheri for Nagumomu was the highlight. It made good impact because of the kriti's popular appeal. The entire exercise was pleasing. Jayalakshmi too shared the raga essays and swara kalpana.

The duo had good percussion support from Satguru Charan on mridangam and Haribabu on ghatam, artistes, All India Radio, Vijayawada.
