ETHNIC: At Mrignayanee.
Soft and ethereal, the Maheshwari sari, known for its intricate pattern was designed by special weavers from Malwa at the behest of Rani Ahilya Bai as a gift for the Peshwas! Retaining much of the traditional charm, the Maheshwari has lent itself to changes. The traditional deep reds, greens and blues happily coexist with the `new' palette of pastel hues, `butties' and broad borders. Also it has absorbed `designer' inputs.
Two pre-Deepavali city exhibitions celebrate the many moods of the fabled Maheshwari. Mrignayanee's festival Maheshwari Mela which opened at its premises (TNSB Complex, Luz Church Road, Chennai) on October 13 has a wealth of block printed saris, dupattas, material in cotton, silk, cotton-silk combinations and in tissue.
"Celebration of Colour," the three-day exhibition of Maheshwari saris, dupattas, fabric and shawls created by `REHWA opens at Appa Rao Galleries, (7, Wallace Gardens, Third Street) Chennai-600006) on October 17. A reputed NGO, REHWA'S role in the revival of Maheswari saris isone of the most inspiring success stories of recent decades. The Maheshwari shawls are particularly eye catching at the exhibition.
