The well-known percussionist S. Bali will be felicitated this weekend
|
VERSATILE Bali has been providing rhythm support for three decades now
S. Balasubramanyam needs no introduction in the sugama sangeeta field. Affectionately called as S. Bali, he is the man who has been described as the "Rhythm King" in the State, right from the seventies. Known for his ability to perform on a variety of percussion instruments, Bali has since the age of 16 been lending instrumental support to a range of artistes. In recognition of his versatility, Hombale Prathibaranga is felicitating Bali in a programme on October 15 at the Ravindra Kalakshetra, 6.30 p.m. Bali will also present his percussion skills and speak on percussion as part of Eka-Aneka, an exposition of a variety of tala-vadyas.
It may be recalled that Bali began his training in mridangam under Palghat Ravindranath Warrier and from then on lent instrumental support to classical as well as semi-classical artistes. In course of time Bali learnt to play on the tabla, dholak, dolki, kol and the khanjira.
He further went on to play on instruments such as the bongo drums, Conga drums, jazz drums and electronic rhythm. Over the last 30 years, he has developed into one of the finest percussionists the State has seen.
The felicitation and lec-dem programme on October 15 will be followed by a sugama sangeeta concert. The concert will feature bhavageethe by Raju Anantswamy, Rameshchandra, M.L. Munikrishna, Kartik Sharma, M. Lakshmikant and N. Aparna. Well-known artistes Shyamala G. Bhave and T.S. Nagabharana will be present at the programme.
