Vivid medium
Renuka M. Nambiar
Glossy colour magazines tucked in the corner of the house made into small pieces, glued to the paper and made into beautiful paintings. Innovative? That is how Renuka M. Nambiar made a foray into collage paintings.
Her paintings were on display at The State Art Gallery Hyderabad last week. Each painting takes nearly 15-20 hours for completion and consumes 5000 to 6000 small colourful pieces. Hailing from Kerala, Nambiar graduated into glass painting and of late collage from her early watercolour, acrylic artwork and oil painting.
Simple in content and elegant in portrayal, one sees in them a recurrence of day-to-day imageswell crafted in vibrant colours. The artist in Renuka has penchant for pets. The problem one encounters with realistic artists is that they tend to slip into the area of illustration.
However, Renuka with her understanding of medium and adept way of portrayal sees that she is not trapped in this tricky canvas. Nambiar, who is holding art exhibitions, at Kochi this month and later at New Delhi, in February, observes there are perhaps a very few artists, who ventured in this area of collage paintings.
Incidentally, many of Renuka's paintings are now displayed in major Corporate Houses both in India and abroad.
