The essence of Deepavali

A. RAMALINGA SASTRY

The poetic play `Deepavali' proved to be a showcase of excellent histrionic talent.

GOD FORBID! Characters square up in the play `Deepavali'.

Sri Saikalaa Niketan which has been staging a poetic play every second Friday for the past 12 years, featured Deepavali last week in the local Prema Samajam Hall. Scripted by V.V.A. Acharya and directed by the many a time Nandi award winner B.V.A. Naidu, it depicted the birth of Narakasura to Srihari in His Varaahaavataaram through Bhoodevi. Coming to know that Srihari is happily settled in the Heaven with Sridevi leaving his mother Bhoodevi to Her fate, Narakaasura develops spite against his own father. His severe penance gets Lord Shiva to give him a boon that he can be killed only by his mother. To make Srihari aware of this, he creates havoc on the earth till the Lord meets him in the battlefield in His Krishnavataara and cannot kill him because of the boon. His consort Satyabhama finally kills him and after coming to know that he is her own son whom she begot when she was Bhoodevi, feels inconsolably sad.

Lord Krishna then gives Narakaasura a boon that his death will be celebrated as `Deepavali', year after year, and remembered forever.

While director Naidu himself lived the role of Narakaasura, Bagadi Vijaya Saradhi as Krishna, B. Vijaya Sai as Narada, Nandi award winners, B.R.Ch. Naidu, A.V. Raghavan as Devendra and Vajradanta, T. Dali Naidu as Siva, I.V.N. Murthy as Brihaspathi, G. Vidyavathi as Satyabhama and M. Sivajyothi as Urvasi also stood out exhibiting excellent histrionic talent.

Ella Appa Rao's accompaniment on harmonium along with Noorsaheb on the tabla was an asset. Make-up by D.V.N.R. Naidu, stage decor and lighting by U.A. Naidu, P.V.R. Murthy, N. Simhadri and R.K. Raju under the able supervision of the president of the Niketan, Chowdari Appa Rao contributed grandeur.

Eminent stage artiste (poetic drama), Bodepu Bapu Naidu from V.S.P. was felicitated by guests of honour R. Ranga Rao, S.V. Murthy, Dr. Y. Haragopal and P. Das at a brief meeting held with the honorary president of the Niketan, Ganta Appala Naidu, in the chair.
