When `Danger' looms large

M.L. NARASIMHAM

A suspense thriller is the latest from director Krishnavamsi's stable.

ADRENALINE TRIP The cast of `Danger' in a tense situation.

They are on the run - three boys and two girls trying to escape from danger. Passers-by and commuters on the road look on with curiosity. Filmmaker Krishnavamsi is talking to the gang of five at a junction at Krishna Nagar - Naresh, Sairam Shankar, Abhishek, Shireen and Swati. Vamsi is shooting for Karthikeya Creations', Danger produced by Madhu Murali who had earlier made Khadgam.

With such a natural approach to filmmaking it is difficult to distinguish that the five running are only acting as there are no giveaways - no generator van, no focus lights or any such paraphernalia associated with film shootings. Just one Arie Flex 3 camera held by cinematographer, Omprakash is all one can see of shooting equipment. It is a long run for the five as they have covered Indira Nagar, Ameerpet and Punjagutta after running the length and breadth of Gandipet. "They were on the run for a few moments at Vikarabad and Narsapur forest areas too," says Krishnavamsi with his characteristic friendly smile.

Thriller

Is it a kind of a road film he is making? "It is a thriller," continues Vamsi. "It is about a gang of three boys and two girls. Friends from childhood they study in the same college. They happen to visit a place where by sheer accident they get into trouble. What is this danger they are facing, from whom and how they face it forms the main plot. The entire story is set in a time frame of 36 hours. Again, it is not entirely fiction. The story idea germinated from a real incident that happened right here in Hyderabad, a couple of months ago." Vamsi is making the film without songs. "In a thriller like this, there is no place for songs. Regular duets and songs may become an obstacle for a smooth flow. Instead of the operators in the theatres or the distributors cutting the songs when it is released, I thought it is wise to do away with them right in the making stage," laughs the director known for his creative skills.

"I wanted to avoid the compulsive decorations associated with a commercial formula in films. I am making this film with a realistic approach retaining the theme's natural flavour. We have an array of artistes from comedians to negative character actors - Brahmanandam, Dr. Sivaprasad, Kota Sankara Rao, Shafi, Satyaprakash, Kavitha, Hema, Lahari and Apoorva to name a few. These characters give interesting inputs to the lead actors who listen to them to save themselves. None of the characters gate-crash into the film."

Except for Swati, the popular anchor of the show, Colours on a private satellite channel, all the other lead actors have faced the camera a couple of time before. "Swati, a biotech student was reluctant to enter films. An admirer of my films and a family friend she said if a meaningful role comes her way, she may consider it. When I wrote the story, I felt she could fit into the role of one of the two girls. She heard the story and accepted the offer. I prefer to select artistes according to the script. I have been following this ever since I made my debut with Gulabi."

Re-recording forms the backbone for suspense thrillers. "Joshua Sridhar has done a fantastic job in his debut Tamil film, Kathal. I have seen the film and enjoyed the music. He is composing the background score."
