A festival of films
The 83-minute documentary `One Day From a Hangman's Life,' directed by Joshy Joseph, captures a day in the life of Nata Mullick, the hangman who was in the news for being called upon to execute Dhananjoy Chatterjee, convicted of rape and murder. The film, which is a searing criticism of the social system, will be screened for the first time in Kerala at the second Cochin International Film Festival.
The seven-day festival, organised by the Cochin Film Society, will begin on October 27. This time the main venue will be Sridar Theatre.
The public screening will be at E.M.S. Town Hall. The other films that will be premiered here are `Guarded Secrets' (Hungary) directed by Zsuzsa Boszormenyi, and `Man on the Train' (France) directed by Patrice Leconte, which will all be in the Contemporary World Cinema category.
This section will also have the Croatian film `The Horseman,' `Ray,' a musical biographical drama on the American legend Ray Charles, which fetched Jamie Foxx the Oscar for best actor and Anup Kurian's `Manasarovar.'
`Sanchaaram' `Oridam' (Malayalam) `Page 3,' `Amu' (Hindi), `Iyarkai' (Tamil) make up the Indian Cinema section. `Swayamvaram,' `Mughamukham,' `Anantharam,' `Vidheyan' and a documentary `Kalamandalam Gopi' by Adoor Gopalakrishnan will be screened as a special section. The Dada Sahib Phalke award winner, who will inaugurate the festival, will be honoured. There will be a screening of the neo-realistic Malayalam film `Newspaper Boy' and Satyajit Ray's `Pather Panchali,' both of which are celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. Ramdass, the director of `Newspaper Boy' will also be honoured at a special function during the festival.
Five contemporary Chinese films will be featured in the section `Focus on China.' There will also be a retrospective on the celebrated Hungarian director Istvan Szabo.
Another highpoint of this year's festival will be the short and documentary films that will also be screened.
