Taming the wild
A puppet show organized by the Kozhikode Chapter of SPIC MACAY (Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth) at its subchapters in National Institute of Technology Kozhikode, and Kozhikode Medical College, turned out to be a novel experience for the students. The performance was by `Dolls Theatre,' a 15-year-old puppet theatre troupe from Kolkota, comprising nine young artistes, including the director, Sudip Gupta.
Symbiotic relationship
The show titled `Taming of the Wild' comprised four scintillating sub-episodes, namely, `The World within,' `The Floral Tribute,' `Movement in Wilderness,' and `The Call of the Wild,' each highlighting the symbiotic relationship between mankind and nature.
Each episode stood out for its technical perfection and focus. An angler catching the father of a rejoicing fish family, a woodcutter making vain attempts to cut down a plant, and a hunter prowling around with his trap to capture cranes, vividly portrayed the avarice of mankind that destroys and encroaches on the lives of other creatures.
But nature ultimately triumphs. The title of the show was the most appropriate, because, the word `wild' was meant to indicate human beings and not animals. The third episode was an interesting and gripping depiction of nature's rhythm. Two birds discover musical tone of the tabla, and in turn start dancing on the tabla, with a feather used to play the violin. A spider, which had been curiously watching this musical experiment of the birds, starts playing the tabla. The last episode, which depicted the cranes, was the best on account of its perfect coordination and lighting techniques. Sankar N
